Why personal training
Almost everybody starts here. These are the questions I hear most often, and none of them are silly.
You don’t need to know everything before you start. That’s what coaching is for.
The approach
Understand what you’re doing and why. Every session is explained, never just counted out.
Learn good technique and use the gym equipment confidently, including the parts of the gym that feel off-limits right now.
Train progressively around your own goals, at a pace that suits the life you actually have.
Build the skills and confidence to train well without a PT beside you every time. That’s the goal.
I’d rather teach you to train than watch you train.
Sessions

Maia is knowledgeable, supportive and makes every session enjoyable. She understands my goals and lifestyle, and I’ve noticed a real difference in my strength and confidence since training with her.
Carman, 20
Maia gave me the confidence to return to the gym at 49 and feel comfortable using weights and machines. She’s friendly, knowledgeable and always prioritises good technique. She’s also tailored my training around running, helping me feel stronger and more confident.
After struggling to stick to a gym routine, I’ve now been training 3 times a week for the past 3 months. Maia makes every session enjoyable, has helped ease my gym anxiety and given me the confidence to train independently. My joints feel better and I have more energy!
Maia created a simple, easy-to-follow strength and balance programme for us to complete together at home. At 78, we’ve really enjoyed exercising as a couple and found the programme easy to fit into our routine. We’d definitely recommend giving it a try!
About
I’m Maia, a personal trainer in Newcastle upon Tyne. I coach at Sound Mind and Body in Benton, and I’m in my third year of a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at Newcastle University.
I’m most interested in physiology, strength and conditioning, and in helping people understand how their training actually works. I came into this from competitive swimming, running and netball, and I’ve completed an Ironman 70.3, so I know what it feels like to be a beginner at something hard.
Evidence-led training, explained plainly, by somebody you can ask basic questions.
Already active? Strength training can help you build a more complete programme around running, endurance sport or recreational training.

Yes. Most people I work with start out unsure which exercises to do or how to use the equipment. Every session is explained, so you learn good technique and build the confidence to train on your own.
No. Your training is built around your current level, your goals and the time you have, and progresses at a pace that suits you.
It’s a relaxed, no-pressure chat about what you’d like help with, your experience and your availability, so you can decide whether training together is a good fit.
Look for a recognised Level 3 personal training qualification, a coach who explains the why behind each exercise, a gym where you feel comfortable, and a free consultation so you can see whether you get on before you commit.
